This year I travelled to Motswari on my own for 5 nights.
As always I travelled by KLM arriving in the late evening but as I had a 6 hour drive I booked in the hotel at the airport to get a couple of hours sleep. This was done for 2 reasons – the fatigue of the flight and the emptiness of the roads in the early morning so I could get out of Jo’burg with the minimum of distractions.
I collected the car the night before and I was on my way by 4:00 in the morning the journey was uneventful to the Timbavati Gate.
I had allowed 2 hours to go from the Timbavati Gate to Motswari from previous experience as we would want to photograph the animals and birds we found along the road. The speed limit on the road is 50kph which was good as you could look to the roadside. During this drive there was a real absence of animals and apart from the Elelphants and baboons but there were the usual Hornbills and Rollers so it only took 1 1/2 hours arriving early at 11:30.
On arrival at Motswari I was greeted with a refreshing drink and shown to my chalet before having lunch and my first game drive.
The routine for the next 5 days would be the same with the wake up call at 05:15 before having coffee in readiness for the first game drive. We would return to the Lodge for breakfast followed by free time until Lunch time (buffet style) the afternoon game drive and then Supper in the Boma (open air enclosure) before going to bed.
